Peer Sharing Sessions - A Time for Conversation

Here are the topics and key takeaways:
Customer Acquisition: The most common conversational theme centered around traffic and sales trends. Participants shared concerns about lower store traffic and fewer units sold, even as revenue remains relatively stable due to higher average selling prices. Apparel also emerged as a frequent topic, with many retailers discussing ways to better integrate apparel into the fit process and increase attachment rates.
Marketing and customer engagement were also front and center. Participants exchanged ideas on targeted marketing strategies, digital tools, and platform integrations that help retailers reach specific customer groups more effectively. Other discussions focused on partnering with local run clubs, creating unique events and activation opportunities, utilizing promotional offers, and leveraging the fit process to guide customers toward products that best meet their needs rather than relying solely on online recommendations.
Staffing and operational excellence: This topic generated strong discussion as well. Retailers talked about the importance of building organizations that do not depend on any one individual, creating staff specialization, delegating responsibilities effectively, and developing more meaningful two-way communication with employees. Several attendees shared approaches to regular staff check-ins that encourage dialogue and engagement rather than simply delivering feedback.
Real Talk: Tough and Transparent Conversation: This topic allowed retailers and brands to discuss some of the current topics that pose opportunities, but also challenges to the channel. A particularly important conversation focused on the relationship between retailers, brands, and run clubs. Retailers emphasized the importance of maintaining strong connections with local run clubs and expressed a clear preference that brand-led demo events, tech rep presentations, and product experiences remain connected to local specialty retail stores whenever possible. Attendees agreed that these collaborations are most effective when they strengthen the entire specialty running ecosystem.
Growth and Long Term Strategy: Technology, inventory management, and the future of retail were the central themes of these discussions. Participants shared ideas around demo programs, email marketing strategies, inventory planning, and end-of-life product management. There was also thoughtful conversation around artificial intelligence, with attendees encouraging a balanced approach that recognizes both the opportunities and limitations of AI rather than viewing it as a solution to every challenge.
As always, the greatest takeaway from Peer Sharing wasn't a single idea or strategy—it was the opportunity to learn from one another. The conversations highlighted the collaborative spirit of the run specialty channel and reinforced the value of bringing retailers and brands together to openly share experiences, challenges, and solutions.
