By the Numbers - Retailer Survey 2024

member survey
In the 2024 version of the RIA's annual member survey, we wanted to get a feel for how our retail members have done this year, and how they see the balance of the year shaking out. The results reflect retailer optimism for continued growth, but not quite the level of optimism from a year ago.

For example, in this year's survey, our respondents remain bullish, with 17% expecting their growth to fall in the 11%-20% range in Q3 and Q4.  This data point contrasts a bit with last year's survey, in which 34% of respondents expected growth in the 11%-20% range. In fact, the majority (73.5%) expect growth to be flat to 10% up in Q3 and Q4, compared to 56% who projected that level of growth last year.  So what we're seeing is continued expectations for growth, but slowing down to a steady, manageable level.

Breaking down by category sales, the expected contribution from footwear remains the key driver, but interestingly, retailers project that apparel sales will end up taking a stronger growth position within overall sales. To wit, 29% of respondents are expecting apparel to grow the most within their stores, compared to 14% who expected apparel to grow the most from 2023's survey.
